Permanent Exhibit at the Family Place
A permanent installation of 30 Badass Women portraits at the Family Place in Dallas, Texas. The exhibit serves as a legacy to Paige H. Flink for her 30 years of dedicated service as the Executive Director and her retirement in 2021.
Artist's Statement for the Paige H. Flink Legacy Exhibit
When I turned 49, I took a deep dive into portrait painting and set a goal to paint 50 women before I turned 50. I met my goal of 50 well before my fiftieth birthday and continued until I surpassed 100 works. These portraits commemorate activists, artists, actors, athletes, educators, scientists, politicians, and leaders in an array of fields. My book, Badass Women, showcases the series. Each badass woman comes alive in a uniquely rendered oil painting and an accompanying quote and short biography. The series and book celebrate the contributions of these women and inspire all of us to acknowledge the badass women in our lives.
When Paige Flink contacted me about my Badass Women series in January of 2021, she invited me to meet her at the Family Place. The facility impressed me tremendously. I saw firsthand the vital need the Family Place serves in the community. Paige described her vision to create an exhibit that would serve as her legacy and showed me places where my portraits might be displayed. I was honored she wished to commission my art.
Before I left, Flink tasked me to paint more Latina women. I went back to my easel and painted six more portraits. Unbeknownst to Flink, this included painting a portrait of her to be part of the installation. I decided to donate all parts of the exhibit. My hope is that this wall of badass women will inspire residents and staff. Viewers can consider the notion of badass and think about the women I have painted. Just as I envisioned my daughter’s generation getting to know their foremothers and contemporary badasses, so can women at The Family Place. Further, they can acknowledge the badass in others and themselves. And equally as meaningful to me, the Badass Women art installation commemorates the important and invaluable contributions badass Paige Flink has made during her 30 years of dedicated service at the Family Place.
